My Betta fish keeps lying above water on a lily pad?
He jumps up there, i guess, and just lies on this fake lily pad, until i poke him and he jumps back into the water. What the hell?? Also, i have a little plastic plant that pokes up above the water and he lies on that with half his body in the water and his head poking out of the water. Is he sleeping? Is he trying to kill himself???
You’re betta has a really cool ability to breathe air like you and me, unlike most fish. They’re called Labrinyth lungs. My betta used to stick her head out of water on a leaf, freaked me right out too. He’s probably just taking a break being a fish and trying out breathing air for a bit.
he’s fine.

bettas are adapted to survive droughts.
He’s not trying to kill himself. This is normal behavior that they do in the wild. They breath regular air also so thats why he is laying like that so he can get to it. Its all normal though so I wouldn’t worry if I was you.

There might be something about the water. a 25% water change and temperature of 80 degrees will probably help.

Id take the lily pad and fake plant out to be safe……Just cause they can gulp air doesnt mean they jump out of the water to do it. You’ll probably find him dead on that lily pad if it stays in there
